FROM STREET TO COURT
Mamtha was found begging on the streets of Mysuru by RLHP staff. While interacting with her, the staff found that she was begging to pay her school fees. That’s when the staff decided Mamtha doesn’t deserve to be on the streets and immediately took her to Asha Bhavana, the Shelter Home for girls and admitted her. Life changed for Mamtha in RLHP. She was enrolled in St.Anthony’s High School where she scored highest marks in her SSLC exams. RLHP encouraged and motivated her by inviting political leaders, writers, academicians to honourMamtha for her success. Film Actor B.Saroja Devi and late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Dr. J. Jayalalitha are few of the people who honoured her with cash prizes. Karnataka State Government recognized her achievement and allotted one house. After SSLC, Mamatha was admitted in Teressian College to pursue PUC Science was she was interested in becoming a Nurse. But unfortunately, due to language problem she was not able to succeed in the course. So, she joined general nursing course and while doing the studies, she fell in love with a roadside vegetable vendor, married him and quit her studies. But to her horror, she found that he married her only for her money and abused her every day. By the time she realised her miserable state, she had a baby girl. With the guidance from RLHP and support from Police Officials, she joined L.L.B. and while doing her final year she left her husband and went to Bengaluru. After completing her course, she started practising Law and her child is in class IV. Now she is leading an independent and dignified life. She helps other deprived people.
BEAUTIFYING THE LIVES OF MANY
When Nandhini’s father passed away leaving behind 3 children and an HIV infected wife. Due to health reasons, her mother being a domestic worker was unable to manage the family. This made Nandhini drop out in the 1st year of Pre-University College and join her mother as domestic worker. RLHP staff identified her at this stage and explained to her about the Vocational Training offered by the RLHP and convinced her mother to admit her in the course. Nandhini thus joined the Certified Beautician course, completed successfully and joined work in a Beauty Parlour. The life skills and Spoken English training she gained during her course at RLHP has given her the confidence to live a dignified life and support her family. She is also interested in continuing her education by taking up the 2nd year exam directly. Through the earnings she gets from creating outer beauty, she contributes to develop the inner beauty of vulnerable girls by supporting them with their education to stand on their own.
WAGES EARNED FOR WORK IS NOT CHARITY, IT IS THE RIGHT
Rampur village comes under Narkaldinni Panchayat of Lingasugur Taluk in Raichur District. The village with 180 families and a population of 2500 people is 42 kms away from the Taluk. Many families come under BPL and most of them were engaged in agricultural activity. The BRSSG member Mrs. Renuka after participating in the awareness programmes, gained knowledge about the MGNREGA Scheme. She identified a group of 30 people who had not received payment for the work under this scheme. The PDO did not release the payment to workers in spite of frequent follow up by the BRSSG members. He also refused to answer their questions or give any reasons. Mrs. Renuka was behind him for 10 months putting tremendous pressure on the matter for which she was threatened by the Panchayat members. In the month of December, RLHP had organised Skill Building training programme in which the PDO was invited. The matter was discussed with him during the training and the PDO then agreed to release the payment. As promised after a week, the payment was released to the group under MGNREGA.
HEALTH CARE IS THE RIGHT OF EVERY CITIZEN
Halbhavi is a remote village in Gorebal panchayat, Lingasugur taluk, in Raichur district. It has just one bus service a day to Lingasugur, the taluk headquarters, 15 kms away. The nearest Primary Health Centre (PHC) is 10 KMs away. Halbhavi is surrounded by seven other villages in Gorebal panchayat. About 10 years ago, a PHC was constructed but never opened. In the meantime a family occupied the PHC. Despite the changes in government, nothing was done to open the PHC. When RLHP started work, the people requested help in opening the PHC. Along with the BRSSG, RLHP submitted a petition to the district health officer (DHO) and taluk office to open the PHC. They promised to do so, but nothing happened. Later a Mass Contact Programme was organised were the DHO, THO and other government officers were invited. At the MCP, the community demanded that the PHC be opened and a doctor and a nurse be appointed. The DHO requested a month’s time, to which the people agreed. After a month the officials came to the village and informed that initially they would appoint an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) and later a visiting doctor. Thus, as agreed the ANM was appointed. The people cleaned the centre and the PHC started to function. The community is very happy to utilise the services of the PHC and does not have to worry about their health issues.
