ENSURING CHILD RIGHTS FOR CHILDREN OF MIGRANT FAMILIES
Migration is a complex phenomenon that is often driven or influenced by social, economic, cultural, human security and political factors. Many of these factors can be categorised as both opportunity and distress induced. The internal migration in India is mostly individual, family and group oriented. Among these, family migration is tending to be hugely vulnerable as they get excluded from accessing basic amenities, services and security at the destinations.
On this scenario, RLHP initiated a new programme for the children of migrant families from Gundulpet taluk of Chmarajanagar district with a prime focus on eradicating the child labour by ensuring the rights of children belong to migrant families and community empowerment to interrupt the cycle of poverty and social isolation of migrant families. 2400 migrant families and their children from six villages of Gundulpete taluk was the target group of the intervention. 331 migrant children and 31 left behind children were closely monitored by the project and encouraged them for schooling. A Child Protection Committee (CPC) were formed to monitor these children and to generate awareness among the community on the importance of education, available government schemes, MGNREGA etc.
